The butterflies...What an educated sense of beauty they have. They seem only an ornament to society, and yet, if they were gone, how substantial would be their loss! -Phil Robinson

Modern man began to walk the earth approximately 100,000 thousand years ago. Butterflies began to grace our world about 130,000,000 million years prior. The math is simple. Butterflies have existed for over 129,000,00 million more years than we have.

Throughout the world, the natural habitats of butterflies are being destroyed at a rapid rate. One of the greatest threats to butterflies comes from man. Many species of butterflies could become extinct because of our continual use of pesticides and destruction of native plant communities. As man continues to build new roads and shopping plazas, butterflies may find it increasingly difficult to locate native nectar and host plants on which to lay their eggs.

Where there is a shortage of nectar and host plants, there is a shortage of butterflies. When there are no nectar or host plants left, there are no butterflies left. It would be a shame to loose any one of these incredible species after 130 million years.
