Bugs and Butterflies Event
Sunday, June 5, 2011
10:00 AM to 3:00 PM

Join Obsession With Butterflies along with plant, and insect enthusiasts for a day under the oak trees. Learn about butterflies and how to attract them to your garden. Rangers will lead nature walks through the native plant garden, offer a Hawk Talk and other activities for children. Brent Karner from the LA Museum of Natural History will have his traveling Insect Zoo with many interesting critters to meet up close. Information will be offered by specialists in water conservation, gardening, beekeeping, vector control, wilderness preserves and entomology. A fun day for the whole family!

Join Obsession With Butterflies under the oak trees as entomologists and other enthusiasts share their knowledge of bugs and butterflies at the annual “BUGS ‘N BUTTERFLIES” event at Riley Wilderness Park on Sunday, June 6th 2010.

Meet Brent Karner from the LA Museum of Natural History, along with his “Insect Zoo”. Brent will be demonstrating interesting insect and lifestyles.

Gardening specialists will discuss planting California native drought tolerant plants to attract pollinators like butterflies, bees and hummingbirds.

Enjoy guided Ranger-led as well as self-guided Nature Walks, the Riley Park Butterfly Garden, a “Hawk Talk”, Nature Center, Kid’s activities and Crafts which will be offered throughout the day.

Its a fun day for the whole family!

Eggs aren’t Just for Breakfast Anymore!

Just the size of a dash or a comma, this tiny Giant Swallowtail enters the world by eating its way out of it’s egg. Some caterpillars will continue to munch on their empty shell, which makes for a nutritious first meal!With all major body parts intact from the onset, this miniature muncher is ready and able to do what it does best. Eat! A caterpillar is equipped with all it needs to be the “Voracious Eating Machine” that Mother Nature intended.

It is thought that caterpillars consume more vegetation than all other insects combined. In fact, a typical caterpillar gains over 3,000 times i’ts body weight. In human terms this would be like a 10 lb. baby becoming a 3,000 lb. adult.
