I found 4 of these guys yesterday eating my lavender tree leaves. I have one to a friend and the other 3 loose in a big pile of leaves away from my tree. Are these caterpillars with painted eyes Western Tiger Swallowtail butterflies? Just curious & couldn’t destroy because they were so cute!

Yes, Karen, this images is of a “Western” Tiger Swallowtail. If you would like to email me a photo of the caterpillars you found, we would be glad to help you to identify them. “Western” Tiger Swallowtails caterpillars will feed on leaves of Willow (Salix), Aspen (Populus), Wild cherry (Prunus), and a few others. What state do you live in? Your caterpillars could possibly be “Eastern” Tiger Swallowtails, but we would need to more about the “lavender tree” you said they were eating.

Oh, cute, reminds me of my friend Kermit. Looks soft and hug-able.
